Ainu:“Chikisani” we the wood that rubs. Ulmaceae, ulmus, fallen broadleaf wood. Ring-porous wood. The line between the heartwood and the sapwood is clear. The heart wood is pale brown and the other is pale white so the annual ring is easy to read. According to the “Kamuiyukara”, the “Chikisani” is the first goddess who came to earth. The god of thunder was charmed by it’s beauty and threw thunder at her. There fire all over and “ainurakkuru” (human) was born. The goddess Chikisani made clothe called “nikappu” from her skin and dressed the ainurakkuru. Elm is thought as the sacred tree in Hokkaido, symbol for creation and luxuriance. The pioneers in the Meiji era looked for the elms for it meant fertility. |
